Thank you for being here.
You ever get a sound in your head that you just can't let go of?
“It Was Always You,” a record I made several months ago, was that sound for me. It brought together my Afro-Rican heritage, an R&B sound that felt new to me, and one of the most personal songs I'd written up to that point.
It still brings me to tears.
I wasn't even planning on making an album. But when a song stays with you for months like that, you pay attention. I knew I had to get this sound out into the world. And that's when I started thinking about building an entire album around it — exploring where that sound could go and sharing more of my story along the way.
Then somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn't making an album about heartbreak.
Or even just about love.
I think it became an album about what love reveals.
Who you become around somebody.
What you tolerate because you want something to work.
What you hide because you want to be wanted.
What happens when the illusion finally wears off.
What it feels like to choose yourself without closing yourself off to everybody else.
And then there are the moments when none of that needs to be analyzed at all.
Sometimes the record can just feel good.
Sometimes you can just move.
Sometimes you can just be happy you made it through whatever came before.
So needless to say, I put my whole damn soul into this album.
It's something you can ride to, sit with, turn up to, or just disappear into for a while — a world that feels familiar, but still gives you something new.
So if one of these songs reminds you of somebody, takes you back somewhere, says something you've been trying to put into words, or just gives you something good to ride to, I hope you keep it close.
